Wine on the sofa: the first minutes, and how to choose who treats what is left

What you do in the first minutes decides how much a company can still recover. Then the choice is about method and fabric, not about the lowest figure.

What to do

  • Blot the liquid immediately with a dry white cloth, pressing instead of rubbing, and keep the area damp with cold water if the fabric label allows wet cleaning.
  • Photograph the stain before anything else touches it and note the fabric type from the care label. Companies quote differently for cotton, linen, microfibre and velvet, and the photo lets them say so honestly.
  • When you compare proposals, ask each company which product class they would use on this fabric and whether they test on a hidden spot first. The answer tells you more than the price.

What to avoid

  • Avoid salt, white wine, bicarbonate or household bleach. They are common advice and they usually leave a halo or a bleached patch that a technician later has to work around.
  • Avoid a hairdryer or an iron on the damp area. Heat fixes the tannins and turns a fresh stain into a permanent one.
  • Avoid booking the first company that answers if the stain has already dried. A dried wine stain needs a technician who explains the realistic outcome before the visit, not after it.

When to call a professional

If the wine has dried, if the fabric is velvet, silk or a blend with a dry-clean-only label, or if a home attempt left a halo, send photos through the quote form. The verified company covering your municipality looks at the fabric and the stain and confirms the method and price before coming.
